The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ annual fundraising event on Oct. 14 will honour Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Michael B. Jordan, and Sofia Coppola, the museum said Tuesday.

Since its inception in 2021, the Academy Museum Gala has been an important fundraising event for the Los Angeles film museum. This year’s gala, the third of its kind, was approved by the striking actors and writers guilds. During the continuing labour stoppages, SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild have curtailed the promotional activities that its members can engage in.

At the dinner, Ava DuVernay, Ryan Murphy, Halle Berry, and museum trustee Eric Esrailian will present honours honouring Streep, Winfrey, Jordan, and Coppola’s accomplishments.

“We are excited to gather again at our third annual Academy Museum Gala to celebrate the power, global impact, and indelible importance of cinema,” said Jacqueline Stewart, director and president of the Academy Museum.

Last year’s awardees were Julia Roberts, Tilda Swinton, Steve McQueen, and Miky Lee. According to reports, the A-list dinner collected $10 million for the museum.

After years of delays, the $484 million Academy Museum built by Renzo Piano has established itself as a cultural institution in Los Angeles since its September 2021 debut. It is a 300,000-square-foot facility with two buildings and seven levels located on the junction of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles.

According to its website, the Academy Museum is “the largest museum in the United States devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of filmmaking” and “tells complete stories of filmmaking — celebratory, educational, and sometimes critical or uncomfortable.”
